Mental health stigma is still a huge problem across the globe, with those suffering facing negative stereotypes as a result. From a young age we are taught that showing emotion is a sign of weakness, leading men to suppress their feelings, rather than seeking help. Most will suffer in silence, feeling too embarrassed to ever admit that they're struggling. Faced with societal pressure to act a certain way and be tough, to "Man Up".
How many times have you heard that phrase?
Signs of declining mental health in Men can be subtle, little things here and there. Such as sudden changes in mood, being quieter than usual or being withdrawn from social events.
There are many kinds of mental health problems affecting men, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other issues triggered by traumatic events such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
Research is vital to help us understand how mental health conditions develop, how they impact individuals and communities, and how symptoms can be most effectively managed and improved.
Left undiagnosed and unmanaged, things can quickly spiral out of control.
74% of all UK and US suicides, are committed by males. Most frequently aged between 35-45. But in most cases, these feelings begin much earlier in life.
Together, we can prevent it from ever reaching that point.
Educating people on the signs of depression and what to look out for. Are they not sleeping, avoiding social situations? Going quiet on social media, not eating enough? No longer enjoying their usual hobbies?
If you notice a friend acting out of character, check in with them.
Learning to understand the kinds of situations and behaviours that may potentially trigger a depressive episode, so that we can take action to avoid them.
Recognizing early that you or a friend is beginning to spiral, is crucial to taking the correct steps in taking back control.
As Men, we know how difficult or awkward talking about our mental health can feel. If you feel like a friend is experiencing some difficulties, or you notice them going through a rough patch, check in with them.
Make it casual enough that they are comfortable, getting them to talk about it is the first step.
